Familiarity with the better known bible stories often means that I gloss over their details and miss their significance. I already know how the story ends, and so the 'surprise factor' is lost. But it's no good excuse - it just means I should pay more attention to those 'familiar' bible stories, and watch out for the subtle more hidden details that my sunday school teacher never pointed out (due to time/resource/understanding constraints). Besides, it's not like my memory is that great anyway. I'm still getting surprised every time I read the bible, and you know what, I think that's pretty healthy. |

Before reading it straight through, the bible just seems to be this random collection of unconnected wise sayings. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" says Jesus... you don't quite know the setting in which He said it, but it's not that important...is it? But then as you start to read the bible from cover to cover...as a story - you find that that's exactly what it is! From page one, there's this brilliant and beautiful plot weaving its way all through each and every book - sometimes subtle, sometimes glaringly obvious, but always there. |

Week 1 - In the beginning |

The bible starts with a picture of God creating, not simply sitting on His throne in majesty, or expressing passive love. He is actively making a perfect and good world in which His image bearers are to be stewards, while enjoying a full and unhindered relationship with Him. We even see God Himself walking about in the garden (Gen 3:8), with Adam and Eve. This isn't any story - it's how things were meant to be, in the most profound sense. |
