What do you do with friends? What do you do with someone you love?

You spend time with them, you enjoy their company, and develop a relationship with them through talking and listening. It pretty much goes without saying!

It follows thus that as a Christian, one who has accepted Jesus as God who paid the penalty for their sins, that they would naturally yearn to develop this relationship with God, through talking and listening. God, in His infinite wisdom and holy love, chose to speak to us with tangible words, in a language that we understand - what an immense privilege! If we truly believe the bible contains the very words of God, why on earth wouldn't we want to read it?

In the difficult times of our lives, we often struggle with figuring out God's will for us, finding out just what He's trying to say. We look for 'signs', ask for miracles, plead for God to say something, anything, so we can know what to do. The thing is - God has already spoken! True, you won't find in the bible "John, I want you to marry Jane", but the bible is rich with Godly wisdom and guidance.

More than that, reading the bible and listening to God regularly brings us out of our narrow inward world and opens our eyes to the things eternal. We exclaim "Should I take this job or that job??"; the bible in response exclaims "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." Why are we worrying about the details of our lives, when a loving God rules the universe? Notice that the bible didn't actually answer the question - it just completely changed the way you even approached the question!

In summary, we read the bible because:

  1. It is the revealed word of God.
  2. It is how we listen to God and develop a relationship with Him.
  3. It takes our eyes off ourselves, and onto God.
And that's more than enough reason to read it.
