What bible reading plan are you using and why? PDF E-mail
Written by Ming Dao Ting

There are many bible reading plans that Christians around the world and through history have used:

  • Straight through from Genesis to Revelation
  • Reading through the Old Testament and New Testament simultaneously, finishing both at the same time.
  • Dividing the bible into thirds, and thus starting at three different points and finish each third at the same time. (Ie. every day you read from 3 different places)
  • Reading through the Old Testament once and the New Testament twice in the year (this is quite popular too)
  • The Robert Murray M'Cheyne's plan, which takes you through the Old Testament once and New Testament and Psalms twice. Every day you have a reading from 4 different points of the bible (Ie. on day one you read Gen 1, Ezra 1, Matthew 1, Acts 1).
  • Reading through the bible chronologically - that is, as the events happened historically. (The bible isn't structured 100% historically. Many books are parallels)

And lots more! The bible reading plan I chose for biblein2008 is the second one (in bold). That's not saying that I tihnk it's the best of the lot; I just felt it was a nice one to start with, because:

  1. It allows us to read through the bible pretty much straight through.
  2. You get to read and reflect on passages from both the Old and New Testaments every day, which is very useful! (We 'live' today in the New Testament times, metaphorically, but the Old Testament is still crucial to biblical understanding)
Some of the other plans which involved reading the New Testament twice in the year, for example, felt a bit too full-on for first-timers, so I thought why not start with something simpler too. And that's basically the reason - nothing complicated.
