Practical or arbitrary rules? 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I don't know whether there is a reason behind each of the rules, but sometimes they do sound really arbitrary. The version of the Bible that I am reading occasionally adds interesting points to note, and throughout Leviticus it sometimes highlights things that scholars think about certain verses. Some of these show that there can be really practical reasons behind some of the rules. For example:

Pigs were prominent in Canaanite worship, so even though pork in and of itself isn't bad, if the Israelites keep themselves completely separate from it, it would be harder for them to mix socially with the Canaanites.

Of course there are all kinds of obvious ones, like quarantining sick people and the rules that will prevent the spread of disease or the damage of relationships. Maybe some of you can think of some other interesting examples?

Maybe there is a practical reason underlying every rule that we just don't know. Or maybe there isn't. I suppose God's laws will always fit perfectly into what works best in the world that He created himself. And knowing that there are possibly logical reasons could help make reading through Leviticus seem a bit less tedious. But I think overall it's still meant to be about them being right with God and trying to stay spiritually clean - whether the rules are practical or arbitrary.

That's a really interesting way of looking at it. You're definitely right, arbitrary or practical, God's laws were about becoming right with Him, on His terms. My logic tells me that there must be a reason behind every law...but we may not understand most of them while on earth.
